Discard any oysters that have opened or have damaged or smashed shells and exposed meat. Place the oysters in a steamer in a single layer; don't overcrowd or stack on top of one another. Place the lid on the steamer. Steam oysters until all of the shells have opened. Once opened, continue to steam for an additional 5 to 9 minutes.
