Italian Cuisine

by romalyn

Italian food is admired throughout the world for its hearty flavors and filling combinations.

Italy, situated in the verdant climate of the Mediterranean, has long been home to a variety of food and flavors, with an ancient emphasis on eating fresh and seasonal foods.

Italians consider the pasta to be the basis of the meal while the sauce is merely flavoring. There should only be enough sauce to coat each piece of pasta, not to drown it.

The Italian culture and Italian cuisine are synonymous. Italians have lived the “slow” sustainable life, for hundreds, even thousands of years, although they would not call it that.

The Italian cuisine has evolved over the years and Italian cooking, as we know it today is both elegant and refined. Italian cuisine benefits from the discovery of the new world with the introduction of items like potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers and maize, which now are all central parts of Italian cooking.

Italian Cuisine also includes an extensive glossary of words and expressions currently use in Italian cuisine and in the world of cooking.

Italian cuisine is seasonal with priority placed on the use of fresh produce. Italians love to share meals with family and friends. Every day meals contain at least two courses (the first course is usually a filling dish of pasta or risotto), the side dish, which is a salad and the coffee.

The Italians take great pride and pleasure in their food, and cooking and eating habits can vary from region to region, even from village to village. Each place has their own unique dishes and ingredients, and even the traditional dishes that are so popular all over Italy are cooked in different ways depending which region you go to.
